Must-watch Qualifiers in Africa
Senegal vs Sudan (September)
Despite a civil war ravaging the country back home, Sudan are in the mix for a place at next year’s competition. Qualification would be a magnificent achievement given everything the country is going through.
With only one team per group qualifying automatically, Sudan’s trip to Senegal in September could be decisive. Senegal are one of Africa’s strongest sides, but the Sudanese spirit means they cannot be written off.
South Africa vs Nigeria (September)
This looks set to be one of the most important WC qualifying matches in Africa. Nigeria are a continental powerhouse, but an inconsistent run of results so far means they are in danger of missing out on a trip to the USA, Canada and Mexico.
South Africa have improved over the last couple of years and they are currently the favourites to finish top. Nigeria will probably need to win this match to keep their hopes of automatic qualification alive.
Ghana vs Comoros (October)
Ghana have had a difficult couple of years, but they are on course to book their spot at the 2026 tournament. The Black Stars are top of their group, but the race for second (and a possible place in the play-offs) looks competitive.
Comoros, Madagascar and Mali are all involved. It would be particularly remarkable if the first of those sides were to make it to the competition: the group of islands has a population of less than a million. Can Comoros stun Ghana in October?
